Legislative & Social Justice Issues

Advocating for legislation to improve health, welfare, and other human services programs is a primary focus for NASW’s lobbying efforts, along with advocating for civil rights and recognition of social work as a profession.

In addition to promoting and developing the practice of social work and quality of work for social workers, NASW supports and endorses candidates for state and national office through a program called Political Action for Candidate Election, or PACE. Virginia-PACE helps to elect and keep in office candidates who support the goals and objectives of the social work profession, including four members of the House of Representatives: New York’s Ed Towns, California’s Barbara Lee and Susan Davis, and Texas’ Ciro Rodriguez. PACE also promotes education and participation in the political process.

As a profession, we strive to advocate for our constituents, for our clients and our clients’ families.  Check this area of the website frequently, especially during Virginia's General Assembly session, during January, February, and March.

The legislative commitee separates all legislative bills into Tiers of action.  Tier 1 being the most actively involved, introduction of legislation, testifying, etc.  Tier 2 is active, but not main point of contact for the bill, and Tier 3 is a "watch" of legislation, taking action if necessary.

All positions of the Chapter are based soley on our National Positions, from the Delegate Assembly, and Social Work Speaks.

Get involved...call the chapter office and speak with Debra Riggs for comments, input, questions regarding Legislation and the Session!
