Social Work Reinvestment Initiative Legislation

National Initiative

NASW National Social Work Reinvestment Fact Sheet: Mandate for Action

Goal of the Social Work Reinvestment Initiative: Secure federal and state investments in professional social work to enhance societal well-being.

Federal Legislation (via NASW National Website)
Several active pieces of federal legislation seek to provide additional educational and employment supports for the nation's social workers. Each of these bills complement the Dorothy I. Height and Whitney M. Young, Jr. Social Work Reinvestment Act, H.R. 5447 and S. 2858.

The Dorothy I. Height and Whitney M. Young, Jr. Social Work Reinvestment Act is the most comprehensive piece of federal legislation ever aimed at addressing the significant workforce challenges facing the profession of social work. Congressman and fellow social worker, Edolphus Towns (D-NY) introduced H.R. 5447 on February 14, 2008 and Senator Barbara Mikulski (D-MD) introduced the Senate companion bill, S. 2858 on World Social Work Day, April 15, 2008. For a summary of this act click here.

The Dorothy I. Height and Whitney M. Young, Jr. Social Work Reinvestment Act is one key component of the broader Social Work Reinvestment Initiative. NASW is advocating for federal legislation in other areas:
