Instructor:

Elisa Nebolsine

Elisa has been providing clinical services to children, adolescents and their families in the Washington area for the past fourteen years.  In her practice, Cognitive Therapy for kids, she uses cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) to help children and adolescents with problems ranging from depression to attention issues with a focus on anxiety disorders including OCD.  In addition to direct clinical practice, Elisa teaches, consults and provides supervision to professionals.  Elisa was named a "top therapist" in the July 2009 issue if Washingtonian Magazine in four categories including: children, adolescents, obsessive compulsive disorder and generalized anxiety disorder.

Description:

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder is a debilitating and frightening experience for anyone, but for a child it can be so overwhelming and shameful that they hide their thoughts and behaviors from others.  Rather than be seen as "crazy" kids, they often withdraw and develop techniques to hide their thoughts and compulsions.  OCD effects as many as1 in 100 children and yet many kids will go for years before telling someone about their symptoms; needlessly suffering in silence.
Treating OCD can be challenging for clinicians.  The exposure response prevention (ERP) techniques used to manage compulsions and behaviors can feel counter-intuitive to therapists and parents alike.  This workshop will address the etiology of OCD in children, review the current research on treatment and explain in understandable terms the method of treatment.  Participants will leave with increased knowledge of the nature and course of OCD in children as well as with skills to begin treatment.
